Counterstrike Weapons (III) – Steyr AUG A3

When the Steyr Aug rifle entered service in 1977 with the Austrian Army as the StuG-77, it was very futuristic-looking compared to the AKs and M16s of that time with its 1.5x optical sight built into its carrying handle and the bullpup configuration (firing mechanism and magazine located behind thet trigger). The A1 version (below) was a counter-terrorist weapon for Counterstrike.

Nowadays, such weapons with bullpup configurations, and in-built scope are commonplace (think FA MAS, L85, SG’s own SAR-21) but the AUG was one of the first to implement these features in a post WW2 service weapon.

The latest version of the AUG, AUG A3 (see gallery at Steyr’s official site here) looks much different from the A1 due to the replacement of the optical sight with the popular Picatinny rails which allows the operator to choose the type of sights required as well as add accessories like foregrips, tactical lights, bipods, etc. However it still retains the distinctive AUG look with the magazine in the buttstock.
