Ots CD Scratch 1200 & Ots Turntables
Ots Labs offers two interesting software for aspiring DJs (freeware and pro versions available). CD Scratch 1200 and Turntables are virtual turntables which simulate two vinyl turntables and a mixer on your desktop. CD Scratch allows you to mix and scratch tracks from your audio CDs and Turntables does the same but for MP3s.
Good stuff for those who always wanted to try out DJing. The freeware version is of course free to download without any time limit. Pro versions with recording and webcasting capabilities are also available but I find the free versions sufficient for playing around with my MP3s and CDs.
The scratching implementation is well-implemented but you will need an audio splitter if you intend to really try mixing two tracks without using the auto-DJ function. (one channel to headphones for cueing the next track and the other to the speakers for the currently playing track) Also, it’s virtually impossible to fully emulate turntablist tricks on the desktop – a mouse simply can’t control the crossfaders and turntables that quickly.
Worth a try though since the installers are less than 2 MBs. No spyware, adware or time limits in the software. (There’s a pre-requisite “Please Register” screen as in any other shareware but the features are not crippled in any way) Download CD Scratch 1200 and Turntables from Ots Labs.
