Workrave

Workrave is a little app to remind you to take a break when using the computer. It works by eithering blocking input and/or the screen when a break is due so that you can take a short break away from the computer. Breaks can be skipped or postponed as required.
Workrave allows you to set three different types of breaks: micro-breaks, rest breaks and a daily limit. You can customize the frequency of each type of break, break length as well as whether Workrave prompts you before a break is due.
Very useful for people who need to work using computers the whole day like me. My personal settings for Workrave are: 1 minute micro-break every 30 mins, no rest break, no daily limit.
One problem with Workrave is that while it works fine with tasks like word processing, coding, web surfing, it doesn’t always work with Windows DirectX games, especially those that play in full screen – some can resume after the break while others crash. I think the problem generally occurs when a particular game does not support Alt-Tab and crashes when the rest break ends and the Workrave rest dialog switches back to the game. The only solution is to quit Workrave before starting the game and restarting it after playing.
Download Workrave (Windows, Linux) at the official site here.
