Military History Books @ Focal Point Publications

Some free military history PDF book downloads from Focal Point Publications.

My favorite has to be “The Trail of the Fox”, a biography on the WWII German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel “The Desert Fox”, written by David Irving, a British author.

Other fascinating downloadable books by David Irving on the some of the leaders of the Third Reich, inlcuding Deputy Fuhrer’s Rudolf Hess, Reichsmarschall Hermann Goring, Professor Theo Morell, Hitler’s personal physician and propaganda minister Dr Joseph Goebbels.

A word of caution: As with all books written about actual men especially in military history, viewpoints of events can be subjective, much more in times of war and conflict. Readers are advised to apply discretion when reading these books, or any similiar books in that case.

Download the books from Focal Point Publications.

Cheers Beer – Because It’s Friday :p

Yep, I know this is very old news for many because I found it while clearing stuff in my harddisks but for the benefit of the remaining 5 people on Earth who still haven’t seen this advertisement at YouTube, it’s time to celebrate every little good thing in life with Thailand’s Cheers Beer.

Oversized Fishing Boats & Liebherr Cranes

Saw this oversized fishing boat at Abang Dian’s blog a few days back.

© Hardian Nazief

Upon closer inspection, I realized it was an enormous barge with 6(!) crawler cranes secured tightly on the deck. To view the actual photo, see the original post here. Hardian says that the cranes are used for tying offshore pipes but I still think their actual purpose is to fish for something really big ;)

Anyway, I went to Liebherr’s website to look for similar cranes. Why Liebherr? Because I remember seeing the name on some construction machinery – German names like Liebherr stand out from the usual Japanese suppliers of heavy construction machinery in SG like Hitachi and Sumitomo (now merged).

Nothing fascinating in the crawler crane and tower crane categories at Liebherr (there’s only so much variation for these two types of cranes) so I looked in the mobile crane category and saw this:

© Liebherr

LTM 1400-7.1 with a maximum lifting capacity of 400 tonnes and a maximum lifting height of 130m.

If that isn’t big enough, take a look at this:

LTM 1500-8.1
Max lifting capacity of 500 tonnes and a maximum lifting height of 145m.

And finally my favourite one below:

© Liebherr

LG 1750 which can lift 750 tonnes with the S2DB configuration (page 37) or lifts loads up to 190m ith the SDWB configuration (page 83).

Really makes me wonder what type of construction projects require cranes of such impressive capabilities.
