Caterpillar 793D Mining Truck

Gigantic mining trucks have fascinated me since I was a kid. I’m still hoping to see a real mining truck although the chances of seeing one in SG is close to nil ;(

This is my favourite Caterpillar mining truck – the 793D. The picture below is taken from page 12 of the specifications, showing the view from the high-tech operator’s station – even luxury cars don’t have armrests for the drivers :) You can download the 32 page PDF specifications for this 12.8 metre long monster.

You view the other trucks in the mining truck range here at Caterpillar.

Was inspired to write this post by the construction vehicle toys at Centrepoint’s OG departmental store – Caterpillar definitely holds the market share for construction vehicle toys there ;)

Cat has a couple of trucks right now in development. The 793F is a really good truck. It has a new running gear. It has a C175 engine. And the cab is completely different, MUCH roomier and comfortable. I was involved in assembling it and do the updates to it. Cat also has a 793E that is electric. I haven’t seen this one but, It has a lot of good features also.

We had a 793F at our mine but the down time was ridiculous. It was down something like 85% of the time. I agree they are much nicer trucks than a C or D model but not very reliable. I drive them on, a daily basis as well and they are right they handle just like a sports car!

Hey nice pics mate, Ive just done some testing on the steering pins on these trucks out in a mine. the guys are right, they’re just like a really really big car to drive. actually they’re just like a really really big car in pretty much most aspects! Your vision is restricted for up to 7m in front of you, and over 14m to the right hand side.
