Games Thursday : Jagged Alliance 3 E3 2007 Trailer

The trailer for Jagged Alliance 3 (JA3) probably disappeared under the radar at Gametrailers.com during E3 2007 because it’s to be published by Strategy First, which is not exactly one of the biggest publishers out there. Found out about the trailer from this forum thread over at GameAxis.

The 122 MB trailer downloadable from the website of the Russian publisher Akella shows some gameplay footage of Kyle “Shadow” Simmons, Sheila “Scope” Sterling and J.P. “La Malice” Viau on a mission in some fictional Near Eastern country again.

The first time you’ll notice is that JA3 is going to be in spiffy 3D now – and the tactical engine looks quite like the one used in Nival Interactive’s Silent Storm series which I’m currently playing.

Some of the new features previously unavailable in Jagged Alliance 2 include multiple tracking cameras for both mercs and enemies, multi-level buildings and higher levels of enviromental destruction.

The animations for the enemy soldiers look quite stiff though, so I hope the gameplay footage is from a work in progress and not a finished product.

View the trailer at Gametrailers.com or download the AVI version over at Akella (playable in Windows Media Player but not in VLC Media Player though).

The release date is currently set as Q3 2008. Can’t wait for this one :)

Yeah, more complex tactics with multiple squads are now achievable – hopely it’s just as good or even better than Silent Storm

I think I’m excited about it, even though the shift to 3D isn’t always for the best. Probably JA 2 will remain the game of choice, but w can’t be sure now, can we?

    An astounding find Roys!

Frankly, gnome, you know graphics best :)

The tracking cameras and environmental destruction will provide more room for devious tactics but whether it’s in 2D or 3D doesn’t affect me a single bit.

There’s a JA2 style game in 3D called Hired Guns : Jagged Edge. Downloaded tthe demo but haven’t tried it out yet.

Hmmm, perhaps you’re right, provided of course the 3D camera works properly. Hmmm, Hired Guns seems most interesting.

Right now, I’m playing Silent Storm which have most of the above features except for the tracking cameras.

There’s physics and penetration stuff incorporated so I actually saw enemies being cut down by burst fire, falling backwards onto a glass table and breaking it in the process.

The automatic 3D camera and interface is pretty wonky though. Thankfully the manual controls work well .. wheeww.

I doubt that physics can be easily incorporated to handdrawn 2D games – that would be the best of both worlds :)
