Art Friday : Keith Thompson – Illustrator

Interesting illustrations of imaginative (and sometimes terrifying) machines of organic origins by Keith Thompson, recommended by e.

Take this Manual Assist Sea Cyborg (above) for example – a Beluga dolphin so warped by genetic modification to the extent that only the exterior silhouette vaguely resembles the original dolphin.

View more in the vehicles gallery which includes several other twisted machines like the Plague Cart and the once-human Polyp Cavalry Steed, an abomination of cruel genetic modifications.

Keith Thompson also does some excellent mecha/robot designs, some in his organic/mechanical style and others in the more conventional retrofuturistic or futuristic style.

Compare the Prosthetic Commando, a exo-skeleton powered by a human brain (above), with the futuristic Hephaestus’s Anvil (below).

Some of my favourite robot designs are Romulus, the steampunk-ish Brass Lion and The Sequester powersuit (read the description for the grisly origins of this robot)

Being somewhat of a gun nut, I also happen to find his ideas for modular firearm designs (below) very interesting too. (Looks like a combination of influences from the AK, Dragunov SVD and H&K MP5)

Keith Thompson doesn’t just design and illustrate machines and other devices as you’ll notice while browsing his other galleries. I find some of more macabre character designs in his Undead and Character galleries strangely enticing – like the Liche and Scrivener below.

The best thing about Keith Thompson’s artworks is that each illustration is accompanied by a short description which either explains the features or design decisions for a robot and/or vehicle or contains a short background story about the particular character. Really evokes the feeling of viewing static exhibits in a virtual museum at times ;)

Yep guys, these artworks are amazing.

Forgot to add that The Sequester reminds me of Maschinen Krieger and Bioshock’s Big Daddies :)
