Military Tuesday : SS-1 ‘Scud-B’ Tracked TEL Illustration
Found this picture of a tracked transporter-erector-launcher (TEL) for the infamous SS-1 Scud-B ballistic missile, better known for its use by the Iraqi army as a terror weapon against Israeli cities during the 1991 Gulf War. This 1983 artwork happens to be the illustration for September 2007, one of the twelve art pieces for the recently updated DIA Military Art Collection 2007 Calendar series.

Before seeing this image, I didn’t know that the original TEL was not the wheeled 8×8 MAZ-543P/9P117M truck (below) commonly shown in news reports of that time (see BBC article on the Scud missiles) but a tracked vehicle like the one above (derived from the IS-2 tank, one of the last Russian heavy tanks to see service in WW2).

The above MAZ-543P/9P117M image was taken from Wikipedia. There’s a 1978 illustration of this vehicle by Dennis Mosher in the DIA galleries here.
