Games Thursday : Digipen Games (II) – Mystick

A puzzle/platformer made by four students (Josh May, Anthony Serra, Josh Rutz, Michael Mackend) at the famous DigiPen Institute of Technology, Mystick puts you in the shoes of a stickman warrior who can alternate from light to dark modes in a world realized through equally abstract vector graphics.

In the light stance, our stickman hero aka Dr Noisewater glows with a bluish aura, triple jumps with ease and throws hadokens. Switching to the dark stance turns him into a feral hellhound-like creature bounding on all fours and allows him to unleash devastating melee attacks. The light mode attack can be charged up to produce a larger and more damaging fireball.

The light and dark modes aren’t only used for combat only, they’re essential for you to get to different areas of a level since red and blue-coloured platforms are activated depending on your current mode.

As for influences, I like to think of Dr Noisewater as a combination of four fighting series characters – Ryu and Akuma from the Street Fighter for the fireballs and teleportation/dodging abilities and Kyo Kusanagi and Iori Yagami from King of Fighters for the reddish and bluish flames (and feral stance in his “Riot of the Blood” state) respectively.

Dr Noisewater can be controlled via a Xbox 360 controller (no idea how) or via the keyboard.

The keyboard controls are as follows
Movement: W A S D
Primary Attack: J
Transform: I
Jump: Space
Dodge: O (Right), U (Left)
Explosion: L
Charge (Light Only): J (Hold and release)
Pause: ESC
Confirm selection: Space

You’ll definitely want to play through the tutorial (under Single Player) to understand the game mechanics before proceeding to the other 3 singleplayer levels or the Vs mode against other hotseat human players.

Download Mystick from the official Digipen page.

To use the 360 controller, it has to be wired, and then just plug it in. The game auto detects the controller and changes to use it. Then the keyboard is second player for Vs. :)

    Hi Josh,

Thanks, will update the post later – hadn’t got a Xbox360 controller to test with at the time of writing.

Any chance of seeing a Mystick 2 anytime soon?

Yea. :) Planning on having it done sometime around April 2010. Mystick was really fun to work on, so the team is excited to get to work on the sequel.

Hi Josh , thanks for your assistance :) Greatly appreciated.

By the way, have you any idea why Mystick isn’t available for download on the official Digipen servers?

It used to be. We had to put up a fight to get it on the site to begin with. THEN, Digipen decided to redo their entire site, conveniently forgetting to transfer our game to the new download section.

I checked out the old link for downloading it, it doesn’t work anymore. All of us were too lazy to push them to relink it… again. We’ve come to the conclusion that Digipen likes pretty games more than ours. :( So we’re gonna make try to make Mystick 2 prettier :D . (still stick figures though)

Since the czech site is available, only if there are other people who want the link to go back up on Digipen, id think i could make the case for putting Mystick up again to the school.

    Hi Josh,

How about I upload the installer here instead?

I’d be totally fine with it, but Digipen has some CRAZY copyright policies that have to be navigated.

I’m asking the staff if it’d be alright. So i’ll get back to you on it soon.

It took a lot of pushing, but the upload link is back on Digipen’s site. I’m happy :)
