Games Thursday : GamerZines = Free Magazines for Gamers
A selection of free monthly downloadable magazines for gamers by the good guys at Cranberry Publishing catering to gamers of most major platforms – there’s PCZine, 360Zine,P3Zine and PlayZine (originally HGZine) for portable systems like the PSP, Nintendo DS and Wii. There’s also specialty magazines like MMOZine and an officially sanctioned fanzine for Konami, creators of the Pro Evolution Soccer and Metal Gear Solid series.

Each issue comes in the form of a downloadable PDF ranging from 10 to 40 MB with an average pagecount of 30 to 40 pages. Surprisingly, the number of ads in each issue is very low for a freely downloadable magazine.

PCZine, 360Zine, P3Zine and PlayZine
More importantly, the (rather short) reviews say it as it is which makes for more informed buying decisions. Being comparatively thinner than their commercial printed counterparts, the coverage of PCZine, XboxZine and P3Zine understandably falls on big-budget games from the larger games publishers and studios. Makes for a good update on what’s hot on the store shelves even if you don’t play much commercial (i.e non-indie) games
Incidentally, PlayZine is my favourite among all the GamerZines. Maybe it’s the limited hardware that developers for portable gaming systems have to work with or the fact that smaller budgets allow for higher risks and more original ideas, because there’s a lot of interesting ideas and game mechanics in some of these games that make PlayZine worth taking a look even if you don’t own a PSP or Nintendo DS (or Wii).
