Art Friday : Myth and History Lessons, Genzoman Style!

Gonzalo Ordonez is one truly prolific artist of mythical and historical personages. A significant portion of his works adorn the cards of the Chilean collectible card game Myths and Legends and according to the official site, there’re already 27 editions for this CCG!

Scores of mythical characters from various cultures can be found in his deviantART gallery where he’s better known as Genzoman. There are mighty gods and heroes from well-known Greek mythology to lesser known (but no less interesting) characters from Inca mythology, Middle Eastern lore and medieval epics among others.

Ninigi no Mikoto, grandson of the Japanese Sun goddess Amaterasu. Quoted from jref.com :

The Japanese Imperial family is said to descend in straight line from this august grandchild of Goddess Amaterasu, things they haven’t disproved yet, and that many older Japanese still believe firmly.

The demon Forneus from The Lesser Key of Solomon.

The titular Brittanian knight from the Catalan epic Tirant lo Blanch, considered as the major influence for Miguel de Cervantes’ famous novel Don Quixote.

As from the historical characters, they run the gamut from warriors from ancient times to modern history to even female pirates  .

Carmen Serdan, sister of Aquiles Serdan, the first martyr of the Mexican Reovlution of 1910. More info on the Serdans can be found at History of The Americas.

Granted, these colourful depictions aren’t the most accurate illustrations of their historical or mythical counterparts but if they don’t simulate your interest in mythology and history, I have little doubt that anything else can :)

Games Thursday : Autumn War – Zombie Killfest

A rather old but innovative zombie killfest by Charles Cuiguet where you command squads of infantry and fighting vehicles to repel a zombie invasion.

Engage the zombie hordes with your squads, wait until the undead things shamble into range before giving the order to fire and watch the wholesale slaughter begin. Just try not to move the mouse in the combat window as it’s used for scrolling the view around the battlefield as it can get quite disorienting at times.

I especially like the close combat sequence that ensues when the zombies crash (slowly) into your defensive line. It’s a blast to watch your troops pull out knives and cut down zombies hand-to-hand but don’t expect many of your troopers to survive a melee against superior numbers of undead.

The strategic portion of the game emphasizes on manuevering your squads (in red) around on the map to attack different enemy units – preferably with you in tactically advantageous terrain (dark green) and them in open areas (light green).

Use heavy armour and RPG troopers to thin out larger groups and the standard assault rifle or pistol squads to mop up the remnants. RPGs are so effective against the undead invaders it’s hard to believe that they were designed to take out light armour – they must have been designed to combat a secret zombie infestation

Later missions allow you to reinforce battered units back to full strength or supplement your squads with an additional jeep or armoured vehicle to provide the extra dose of firepower like this :)

A sequel is currently in the works and you can follow the progress at the creator’s blog at Newgrounds.

Play Autumn War.

Military Tuesday : Kalashnikov Arms Catalog

A comprehensive list of specifications and photos of the prototype and production firearms designed by Lt. Gen Mikhail Kalashnikov. This site is actually an official online conversion of a MilParade printed publication, the Kalashnikov Arms Catalog edited by Alexei Nedelin but I have no idea where this book can be bought – the old order page can be found here.

Other than his world famous AKs and light machineguns, lesser known prototype submachine guns and pistols designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov like his first SMG design in 1942 are featured as shown below(image taken from cruffler.com)

A selection of foreign AK variants are showcased, including an interesting Hungarian variant – the AMP-69 assault rifle which can be equipped to fire 40mm anti-tank or anti-personnel muzzle-fired grenades.

Download the Kalashnikov Arms Catalog, a 1.6 MB zipped file of HTML pages. (had to point to my backup copy as the original link at milparade.ru as indexed by The Online Books page is currently down.)

Random Monday : BigLorryBlog

Rather evident what you can expect to see over at the aptly-titled BigLorryBlog. For readers like me who are awed by big trucks and other heavy vehicles, it’s gonna take you hours poring through the archives of BigLorryBlog and savouring each jaw-dropping photo like the one below.

Sights like these four Ultra Pacfic heavy haulers pulling a 225-ton transformer in South Africa. (More pictures here and here)

Definitely something that we can’t see in Singapore : Snow/Ice vehicles.

I’ve seen tank transporters here but not one that hauls three armoured vehicles at a time.

A MAZ ballistic missile launcher converted for civilian usage.

A M26 ‘Dragon Wagon’, just one of the many restored and rebuilt Amercian WWII vehicles by a group of French enthusiasts.

Glimpses of the truck proving ground in Worth, Germany for Mercedes trucks.

Future truck design : check out the streamlined shape of this fuel-efficient MAN concept truck.

Some impressive artwork on a Sean Taylor Transport vehicle.

Finally, something that brings back childhood memories of watching labourers unloading sacks of rice from trucks like this Bedford truck.

There’s a lot more in the archives at Big Lorry Blog.
