A commercial game sponsored for free download by the US Air Force, Area-51 puts you in the shoes of a certain Ethan Cole of HazMat Team Bravo sent to assist in the containment of a contagious virus outbreak and the resultant human mutants in the mysterious Area 51 (which, ironically is owned by the USAF).
X-Files star David Duchovny and musician Marilyn Manson feature in the voice credits for Ethan Cole and Edgar The Grey respectively. I wonder if David Duchnovy’s movie Evolution provided the inspiration for triple-lensed eyes of the aliens in the intro video.
While not exactly a realistic FPS in any way, given that you can wield two weapons akimbo and the recoil of the submachinegun makes it nearly impossible to shoot at anything with a respectable level of accuracy, Area-51 is nonetheless a rather enjoyable (and free) game despite the rather generic title and cliched storyline.
As the specialist for HazMat Team Bravo, Ethan is equipped with a scanner which can identify most living organisms and can scan unusual items and top secret documents to unlock databank entries and secret videos which further flesh out the in-game storyline.
Watch out for those green lights!
A nice touch in this game is that when you reload, the flashlight attached to your weapon no longer points straight ahead, shrouding the immediate area in front of you in pitch darkness except for the glowing green eyes of those mutants rapidly closing on your position. Spooky but nothing when compared to the paranormal-themed The Suffering, another USAF-sponsored game.
