Military Tuesday : PEO Soldier Portfolio 2009

The latest edition of Program Executive Office (PEO) Soldier Portfolio for 2009 once again demonstrates the technological superiority of the US Army over its counterparts worldwide. Of course, warfighting requires more than just dependence on high technology but it doesn’t hurt to gain every ounce of advantage over your opponents, does it :)

While increasing soldiers’ lethality and surivability is definitely worthwhile, it’s also something that few countries can afford on an army-wide basis. The above page puts the cost of fully equipping a modern US Army soldier at 17,242(!) USD each as opposed to slightly under 2,000 USD thirty years back.

Gear like AN/PPS-26 Sense Through The Wall (STTW) allow US Army soldiers to detect and locate personnel behind walls at standoff range.

New infantry weapons introduced include the 7.62mm M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System (SASS) which replaced the aging M24 SWS earlier this year and a new Lightweight Low-Recoil .50 Caliber Machine Gun (lightweight in Army terms is anything but :) ) currently undergoing trials.
