Games Thursday : OpenTyrian – The Best DOS Shoot’em Up – Now for Windows XP/Vista and Other OSes

Arguably the best DOS-based shoot-em up in my opinion, Tyrian is now available for gamers on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux (and Nintendo DS, PSP, even Wii!), thanks to the dedicated efforts of the OpenTyrian team who modified the source code to use the cross-platform SDL libraries and of course, Jason Emery, who graciously offered Tyrian as freeware back in 2004.

Installation for Windows users is fuss free : Just grab the pre-compiled Win32 version from the OpenTyrian forums (direct link), the SDL libraries – both SDL and SDL_NET (look under Runtime Libraries) and the original Tyrian 2.1 data files from the OpenTyrian site and unzip them into the same folder in the following sequence : data files, OpenTyrian, SDL, then double-click Tyrian.exe and enjoy!

I don’t think I need to go into how good Tyrian is : old-time shoot’em up fans should already know this classic which comes complete with fully upgradable ships, weapons and equipment, retro tracker-ish music and a storyline to boot (via datacubes collected within missions) while newer fans of genre should not miss this definitive icon of DOS shoot-em up history.

Datacubes – one of the pioneering forms of in-game advertising, courtesy of EPIC MegaGames :P

To toggle full screen mode, go to the OpenTyrian option in the main menu and set it from there. You might also want to set the game speed under Options (press Esc in-mission).

Download and play OpenTyrian.

Military Tuesday : Julescrafter – Military Papercraft

Found Julius Perdana’s aka Julescrafter‘s site while loooking for UFOS quite a while back.

While UFOs definitely don’t make a Military Tuesday post no matter what you say about WWII German wunderwaffen, conspiracy theories about Area-51 or even the USAF’s Project Blue Book in the 1960s but Julius’ papercraft models of armored fighting vehicles do make a worthwhile post.

A FV101 Scorpion light tank model can be downloaded from Julescrafter.com for free as well as a model of a mythical and supposedly WWII-vintage Haunebu II flying saucer in German field grey.

The plans for other vehicles can be had for a small fee. Here’s a preview of some of the papercraft armour models available for purchase.

A Russian BMP-2M. My favourite model because of the turret detail.

A Russian T-64B.

An Israeli Merkava Mk II.

A French LeClerc.

Art Friday : Favourite Illustrators of Warhammer 40,000 (VII) – Nacho Fernandez (nachomon)

At first thought, toon style illustrations might seem totally unsuitable for depicting the grim and gory Warhammer 40,000 universe but Nacho Fernandez‘s illustrations just manage to fuse the lighthearted playfulness of toons with Warhammer 40,000 without losing the enticingly dark flavour of Games Workshop’s sci-fi meta-universe.

© Nacho Fernandez

I first encountered his work in the form of the Imperial Fists Commander in the Firebase Wallpaper pack (which I won’t feature here again because yellow isn’t my favourite colour :P ). Personal prejudices aside, I just feel that that his Imperial Fists Commander isn’t representative of the far cooler works in his deviantART gallery where he’s known as nachomon. Above are two of my favourites – I just had to pick the Eversor Assassin and Chaplain Savaal because skull-faced characters are cool!

© Nacho Fernandez

Some more cool Warhammer 40,000 stuff above – Techmarine Dreadnought Tjorvi and an assortment of other characters from a murderous Khorne Berzerker, a heavily-armed Tau Commander to a rampaging Tyrant Guard of Hive Fleet Leviathan.

© Nacho Fernandez

And for the more artistically inclined visitors, his tutorial on drawing a Space Marine should prove quite useful for learning to draw like his Iron Dragons Space Marine.

© Nacho Fernandez

All is not lost if you’re not a Warhammer 40,000 fan of course since there’re equally fabulous non Games Workshop related works in his gallery, like this piece featuring a faceoff between Space Marines of two different universes, Dreamcast Transformer and a vicious Alien Xenomorph.

The cover for his Midnight Rockers #1 is pretty impressive too.
