Games Thursday : Frenetic Plus

Frenetic Plus delivers what its title implies – fast, frenetic action. Reflexively-challenged gamers needn’t shy away from this awesome oldie though, since a healthy dose of tactical acumen is an equally useful substitute for mad action gaming skillz in Frenetic Plus. I know, cos my reflexes really suck :P

And since if offers a bit of everything, I recommend every gamer to give it a try irregardless of your favoured genre. And if you’re the more visually-oriented type, you’ll be glad to know that the graphics look reasonably well for a game of its age (Frenetic Plus was released in 2005).

Designed and developed by Kenneth Thornton (aka Sirocco), the game puts you in the shoes of Mercen 505, an android pilot who finds herself in the midst of a civil war between her android counterparts and the human Exploratory Force. As the story progresses through a combination of journal entries, news articles and incoming email messages inside the game, you select one of several suits to pilot and outfit it with a selection of weapons and avionics to fit the mission objectives or your playing style, before launching out from your Griffon mothership to engage the enemies.

Your objective in each mission is usually to singlehandedly eliminate all opposing suits but Frenetic Plus mixes and matches the type of suits you encounter on each mission to keep things from growing stale. You start off opposed by puny Wolf scout suits and slow-moving Moray support suits and before long, agile hard-hitting Shark command suits and heavily-armoured siege suits get thrown into the fray. Thankfully, a total of 7 suits, 15 sidearms, 4 missiles and 10 special weapons pods can be unlocked (or purchased)to beef up your offensive capabilities. And that’s not including the various upgrades that can be purchased for each of your suits to boost their defensive strength and survivability.

Finesse is rewarded in this game as you attempt to inflict the minimum damage neccessary for an enemy to brew up and explode, thus increasing the amount of salvage acquired and the corresponding C.L.A.Y. that you can spend for upgrading your suits’ capabilities and firepower. Awards (and the corresponding C.L.A.Y bonuses) are also given during the debrief after each mission for outstanding combat performance.

As you can see from the screenshots (grabbed from the official site since I haven’t been able to capture my own :( ), Frenetic Plus looks and plays like a conventional shoot-em-up but with a a circular playing field as opposed to the more traditional horizontally or vertically scrolling view. While this means that enemies attack from all directions it also allows more room to manuever than in most shooters. It also emphasizes the need for tactical awareness since enemy suits routinely attempt to flank and envelop your single suit from all sides while you’re engrossed in trying to destroy the suit directly in front of you.

This larger playing field and varying projectile velocities of each of your weapons also ensues that judging your target’s distance and calculating the lead to it (keeping in consideration its speed, of course) before firing is crucial to successfully hitting enemy suits – I’m positive that WWII flight simmers will be very familiar with these techniques.

Players of FPSes will be familiar with the side and circle strafing tactics required to take down individual units in each successive wave while simultaneously dodging enemy fire and taking care not to be outflanked and enveloped by other enemy suits.

The default keys for navigating the menu are Left Alt for Fire/Accept, Left Control for Strafe/Cancel with the arrow keys for movement. Once you create a new game, you can remap keys under Configuration. Gamepads are highly recommended (I find that mapping Strafe and Boost to the trigger buttons makes it easier to control your suit).

Wallpapers Wednesday : Drift City

© NHN Corp

Toon style cars adorn the wallpapers for Drift City, NHN Corp’s MMO racing game – there’s the always recognizable Mini Cooper and a selection of muscle cars with a seemingly out of place Vokswagen Type 2 van.

© NHN Corp

And a SUV (A Jeep Cherokee XJ perhaps?) I’m not sure that any self respecting racer would pick that over the other offerings like the two below. The yellow one is definitely a Dodge Viper, not too sure about the red one.

And let’s not forget the obligatory pretty young thing :P

Random Monday : Narrow Gauge Locomotives in Singapore

Exhibit A – WTH is this?!

Recently acquired an interest in trains and railways after seeing Exhibit A (above) at one of the Circle MRT Line construction projects along my daily commute. I’m quite sure it is a locomotive since there are some narrow tracks laid on the ground (see below) and besides, which road travelling vehicle needs wheels of steel?

There doesn’t seem to be much information or pictures on the web on narrow gauge industrial locomotives though – either that or I have to start brushing up on my search engine techniques at searchlores :)

A couple of sites that I found – a manufacturer of industrial narrow gauge electric locomotives – Fushun Beilong Electric Locomotive Company Ltd. and Roger Marks’s Narrow Perspectives.

Do add a comment if you have more info on these interesting vehicles.

Games Thursday : Fraxy – Boss Shooter

Fraxy was featured by many freeware game websites a couple of years back – here’s Indie Games’ post harking back to May 2007. While the reviews of this engrossing little timekiller may have all but disappeared, the author has never stopped development on this boss shooter and has continually added new bosses to the game (it’s either that or I haven’t played long enough to encounter all possible bosses when playing Free Play random mode).

The replayability of Fraxy lies in it being readily configurable to suit individual gaming styles. Your default ship comes with a fast firing laser Bullet and a stronger Blaster shot but can be configured with up to 5 different weapons under the Player tab with the supplied config.exe. Alternatively, you can change your ship settings under Player Status when you pause the game.

The game features a roster of 40+ bosses out of the box with each requiring a different strategy to defeat e.g hit-and-run guerilla tactics, circle-strafing, etc. There’re the usual slow heavy hitters like Snow-Ray, bosses that mimic charging bulls like Blazer and even dancing swords among the bosses. More can be added to the game with the editor and as you can see from the screenshot below, there is a mind-boggling number of options in the editor for creating your very own boss enemy.

There’s some pregenerated campaigns in the Try mode but I usually play the Free Play mode where you can pit your skills against a randomly generated string of bosses. The game provides visual cues with the critically damaged parts of the boss glowing red which makes it easy to target and destroy individual parts of each boss before finishing it off for good.

Once destroyed, each boss releases powerup(s) which can be used to either upgrade your ship’s weapon power (P), energy regeneration rate (R) or maximum energy (E) before the next boss teleports into the arena. Energy is everything in this game – it not only represents your health but also provides the necessary power to fire your weapons or for a temporary burst of speed to get out of a tight spot or quickly position yourself for a shot at the more elusive bosses.

This screenshot was taken exactly two seconds before my ship was rammed to pieces by this charging Blazer.

The cursor keys move your ship and left and right mouse buttons fire your currently selected weapon and activate the afterburners respectively. Pressing Shift or using the mouse wheel cycles through your weapons. The controls are of course fully mappable.

A couple of beautifully painted wallpapers for Top Cow Comic’s First Born, a self-contained three issue series which debuted at Top Cow 2007 summer event. Sure, it’s old stuff but these two lavishly detailed wallpapers which happen to be the covers for First Born Issue #0 and Issue #1 respectively, still look fantastic.

Since Top Cow Comics stated this series involves the entirety of the Top Cow Universe, it meant that familiar characters like Jackie Estacado (The Darkness) (below), …
