Wallpapers Wednesday: Darksiders : Wrath of War

Wallpapers from Darksiders : Wrath of War developed by Vigil Games with comics writer/artist Joe Madureira as creative director.

The player will control one of the four fabled horsemen of the apocalypse, War, mounted on his fiery steed Ruin. Definitiely a very different character from the classic 15 century woodcut print of the Four Horsemen (below) that I saw in books as a kid :)

War is the second horseman from the right

There’s also concepts for the game which you can find at www.joemadfan.com.

Download these wallpapers at the Darksiders : Wrath of War website.

Military Tuesday : Crush The Castle(s) with a Mighty Trebuchet

The counterweight trebuchet was one of the most awe-inspiring siege machines of the medieval age (or the one of the most fearsome, depending on which side you happened to be)

Its range and power may pale in comparision to the gunpowder artillery that rendered it obsolete – advances in gunpowder and artillery design resulted in the infamous Paris Gun of WWI which fired 94 kg shells out to a range of 130 km – but a trebuchet’s ability to hurl 100+ kg rocks, diseased cattle and other projectiles at or over the walls of an enemy castle 270 metres away was mightly impressive for its time.

Inspired by Liam Bowmers’s Castle Clout, Armor Games’ Crush the Castle offers you the chance to tear down 24 different castles with a wonderfully animated trebuchet recreated in loving detail. Artwork in this game is supplied by Chris Condon of Con-Artist Productions (The Last Stand, Warfare 1917, etc)

The first few “castles” are questionably designed – I’m certain that medieval lords did not build their castles on stilts like this one here.

This masochistic lord probably wanted a superior vantage point to better witness his own (literal) downfall, I guess :)

Besieging a shabby wooden stockade complete with three beautiful princesses in Crush The Castle? How unchivalrous :P

It’s a delight to watch the physics kick in as stones (and later, primitive bombs) from your trebuchet make solid hits on the weak points on the castle causing the entire shoddy structure to crumble and collapse like a house of cards. And no, Crush the Castle isn’t meant as a history lesson – castles back then definitely didn’t topple over by themselves even when hit by the huge projectiles fired from an even more massive trebuchet and neither did they build castles this badly :)

Behind the comic facade of silly lords falling to their death from their grandoise but obviously unstable fortifications, there are several good puzzle-like designs in here – particularly a couple where the wrong shots would bring down half the castle but trap the remaining characters beneath multiple collapsed pillars of wood and stone, while simultaneously protecting them from your projectiles.

Once you have destroyed all 24 strongholds, you can create your own castles and then test their defensive strength with the built-in level editor.

Overall, Crush the Castle is a wonderful little timekiller – nothing to complain about there except for the fact that you only get five shots to take out all the inhabitants of the castle, be they haughty royalty or loyal knights and men-at-arms. Why anyone would take the trouble to erect a powerful trebuchet only to fire only five rocks is beyond my comprehension – must be the fickle pettyiness of those feudal times.

Play Crush The Castle.

Art Friday : Alien+Mecha Designer Tham Hoi Mun

© Tham Hoi Mun

First encountered Malaysian artist Tham Hoi Mun’s (aka NuMioH at deviantART) artworks though his Dominance War III entry Garabath – a alien mechanical hybrid bristling with spikes from head to toe and looking awesomely badass. If Garabath’s isn’t awe-inspiring enough for you, the wispy, smoky Cursed Soul of Garabath should do the trick:)

More ominous half-alien, half-machine entities await at his deviantART gallery including a lethal chainsaw chopper (above) and a couple of Japanese-inspired mecha designs (no, not Gundam :D ) – Ameterasu and the lion masked, ebony-armoured Bishamon.

A couple of my favourite mecha designs by Hoi Mun. Menacing, aggressive and bloody red stuff :)

Not every mecha in his gallery is mean and spiky though, there’s Zierneth (below), one fine example of his sleeker and more streamlined designs.

Besides the mechanical designs and illustrations, there’s the more organic, fantasy stuff like this an fearsome undead king wielding a murderously huge mace, a mantis warrior as well as a well-fed zombie (finally a zombie who doesn’t look like a walking sack of bones :D )

Games Thursday : Heroes of Annihilated Empires Demo Impressions

Over the next few weeks (months?), I’ll be writing about my impressions of the demos for some older games that I’m currently playing. Most of these games ran sluggishly on my hopelessly outdated PC back then so I gave them another shot recently with my new PC. Several titles are actually quite good, although not Game of The Year material, but still enjoyable enough :)

Today, I start off with the demo of GSC Game World’s Heroes of Annihilated Empires released in 2006. I downloaded the demo for this game solely on the basis of the action-packed E3 2006 trailer released on Gametrailers.

Small horde…

Big horde …

Bigger horde …

The demo offers a single mission from the Elven campaign which you play RPG style, leading solitary ranger Elhant who’s finding his way back to World Mountain in the fantasy land of Aquador. Of course in typical RPG fashion, Elhant starts off at level 1 and tackles progressively larger groups of tougher enemies until he attains enough power (the maximum level for demo mission is 80), items and magic to singlehandedly raze the enemy’s base to the ground while simultaneously cutting down entire companies of skeletons, zombies and other undead beasties defending the stronghold. That’s right, Heroes of Annihilated Empires is also a RTS (skirmishes allow you to play in either RPG or RTS modes – my advice is to stick to RPG mode – the RTS mode is 100% conventional and feels underwhelmingly weak compared to the RPG mode.

As you can see from the screenshots, the world of Aquador is excellently rendered with lush grasslands, glowing red lava caverns, barren deserts and gloomly graveyards. The beautifully illustrated portraits and magic cards, combined with the magical lighting effects for Elhant’s spells make Heroes of Annihilated Empires a very good looking game indeed. Oh, the addition of a wrecked MiG-29 ‘Fulcrum’ fighter jet in Aquador below is rather intriguing too

The RPG mode adds little innovations to the genre but exploring a wondrously beautiful world like Aquador makes up for it. An interesting game mechanic in Heroes of the Annihilated Empires is that when you level up, you either pick one of two randomly selected stat increases or skip both upgrades and choose from the full list of upgrades upon the next level-up instead. The game also colours the display in a reddish haze as a visual cue when Elhant is critically wounded and paintsthe world with a bluish tinge when Elhant is being resurrected from the dead. If I’m not wrong, I believe Normal difficulty provides unlimited lives, Hard difficulty grants a total of 3 lives to your character.

The belligerent critters that inhabit Aquador are very nicely modelled although the same can’t be said of the units of the Elven or Undead factions – they’re easy cannon fodder for high level heroes like Elhant even when they fill the entire screen in the hundreds which probably explains the need for low res 2D sprites to represent them.

I felt that Heroes of Annihilated Empires could be a better game if the gimmicky RTS mode was scrapped – the elven units accompanying Elhant fall like flies when up against determined opposition. Furthermore archers and mages have a habit of taking potshots at enemy units in range while Elhant is busy fighting elsewhere and elicting a furious and usually lethal response from a bunch of very annoyed orcs or other nasties. This RTS-style micromanagement of units simply complicates matters without adding anything substantial to the gameplay.
