Games Thursday : Duke Nukem is Back! (Without the Pixels)

Another great find by the gnome several weeks back - a High Resolution Texture Pack for the 1996 FPS game Duke Nukem 3D (DN3D).

© Duke Nukem 3D HRP Team

The first thing you’ll notice is the size of the High Resolution Pack - 190 MB of high resolution textures and polygonal models compared to a tiny 28 MB used for the full installation of Duke Nukem 3D. The installation is a breeze - simply select the directory where you installed DN3D and the installer will figure everything out for you :)

If you don’t have the full version (v1.3 and above), you can always download and use the shareware version at 3DRealms :)

The entire package is extremely polished and works without a hitch on my Windows XP plus the entire experience is great - there’s no more low-res loading screens and pixelated sprites, so bump the settings to the max to relive Duke Nukem in true 3D or play in all its pixelated 8 bit Classic Mode glory by fiddling with Video Mode under Graphics Options.

On to the screenshots … gnome was probably too busy playing to include them in his post :(

When two similiar images are displayed, the one on top is the 8 bit original version and the one below is the 32 bit high resolution version.

The opening scenes of Hollywood Holocaust still rocks today in 32 bit :)

Hmm, the posters look much better now :)

A working film projector in a FPS? Incredible!

One of the pointless slime girls as a sprite (top) and 3D model (bottom)

A mirror for the Duke to admire himself - pretty cool huh?

Duke Nukem 3D had plenty of character in those days - none of that serious-I’m-a-lone-marine-saving-the-world BS

I only played until Death Row, the third map in the first Episode L.A Meltdown before I succumbed to nausea - guess I haven’t been playing FPS for a long time :(

Download the High Resolution Pack and/or shareware Duke Nukem 3D from 3D Realms.

BTW, the gnome has also found a System Shock 2 high resolution pack which you can read more over here. More texture packs please, my dear gnome :)

Sterling work and an excellent comparison. Thought of actually trying this in video -say youtube- format?

Oh, and thanks a ton for the plug!

@gnome: Nah, I’m too lazy to compile them, besides I deleted the original screenshots after posting the resized versions.

@elderly: I guess he was too busy playing … :)

Ahh…. I remember going my friend’s place almost everyday after school, because my PC was only a 386 or something, just to play Duke Nukem.

Yep, it really brings back good memories - I still remember a museum and an underwater level which I still haven’t got to without using cheats.

Too bad I feel nauseous after playing 20 - 30 mins, I definitely palyed it 1+ hours daily back in 1997 :(
