I came across three excellent works by the late poet and novelist Padraic Colum (1881 – 1972) on Greek and Norse mythology recently - The Golden Fleece and the Heroes Who Lived Before Achilles , The Adventures of Odysseus and The Tales of Troy and The Children of Odin respectively. The first book The Golden Fleece and the Heroes deals with Jason and the Argonauts’ quest for the Golden Fleece and includes stories about the various heroes who comprise the Argonauts : Hercules , his twelve labours and his ascent to immortality, Theseus and his victory over the Minotaur in King Minos’ labyrinth, Perseus and his quest to obtain the head of Medusa, one of the three terrible Gorgons and more. I find Padraic’s works a joy to read despite the fact that these books were primarily aimed for younger readers. A quaterly magazine on Allied military aviation during WWII, Steve Darlow’s Fighting High e-magazine provides a more personal look into the airmen whom served in the Allied air forces, from fighter pilots to the crewmen of the massive bomber armadas over Germany than most general history books offer. In each issue, there’s mission reports from the actual pilots and crewmen who participated in them as well as recollections and memories in words and pictures by Allied veterans. The last issue showed a four engined bomber with a bold black H in a white circle close to the wingtip (above). Can’t remember how I found Vektorika Magazine , a vector art e-mag produced by Godot Guntoro of VektorJunkie.com but I thought it might be interesting to others since I discovered some really good stuff in several issues.
