Wallpapers Wednesday : Rush For Berlin

If you’re a military vehicle nut like me, you might like these wallpapers from the (rather old) WWII RTS Rush for Berlin. Developed by Stormregion, the nice guys who gave RTS gamers a lovely Christmas present in 2005 with the free download of S.W.I.N.E, a whimiscal RTS set in a war between militaristic pigs and peaceloving rabbits.

© Stormregion

Some detailed renders and closeups of the more well-known land and aerial military vehicles of WWII, with the usual suspects like the German King Tiger heavy tank, the Russian Katyusha “Stalin’s Organ” and a host of other tanks, trucks and planes.

© Stormregion

A closeup of the gun mantlet for the 105 mm cannon installed on the massive American T-28 Super Heavy Tank which was only produced as a prototype. Other than its powerful gun and heavy armour, it provided no significant advantages since its performance was abysmal (a max speed of 13kmh!) due to its heavy weight and underpowered engine.

© Stormregion

For the icon art collectors, there’s a very nice image made up of icons from the game - I spotted an icon for the T-28 among the 160 icons in there :)

Military Tuesday : Theatre of War Renders

Found this collection of 3D renders of over 120+ fighting machines that served in the armies of the Allied and Axis powers during WWII.

Created for the game Theatre of War developed by 1C Company, most of the major armoured vehicles of WWII are represented in this set of wallpapers found at Best Wallpapers along with transport trucks and half-tracks as well as field guns, notably the German PaK 43/41, the anti-tank variant of the infamous ‘88′ FlaK.

© 1C Company

The level of detail recreated in these models is sufficiently high enough to differentiate the different variants of the same tanks (3 variants each for the German PzKpfw III and PzKpfw IV - Ausf F, Ausf J and Ausf M for PzKpfw III, Ausf C, Ausf F2 and Ausf H for the PzKpfw VI)

Now for the oddity parade :)

Vickers E DW

A pre-WWII tank with twin machinegun turrets.

NKL-26

© 1C Company

Probably the fastest way to travel across the snowy regions of Siberia.

T-27

© 1C Company

A lightly-armed Russian light tank with a really unconventional design.

TKS

© 1C Company

Must be very unwieldy to target an enemy tank with the fixed position of the cannon mounted offside on this Polish tankette.

Some of my favourite models. I especially like how the textures for some of the German tanks recreate the look of Zimmerit paste used as a protection against magnetic mines (which incidentally were never used in larger numbers by the Allies)

Military Tuesday: US Army Center of Military History Prints

A gallery showcasing a selection of downloadable wallpaper-sized prints and accompanying accounts of battles fought by the US Army since the American Civil War to Operation Desert Storm a decade ago, as presented by the US Army Center of Military History.

Battle of Bud Bagsak (Moro Rebellion, 11 - 15 June 1913)

© US Army Center of Military History

One of the conflicts in the Philippines where fiercely independent Moros revolted against the introduction of American rule in the early 1900s. The Moro Rebellion (otherwise known as the the Philippines-American War) also heralded the introduction of the Colt M1911 .45 pistol as the service pistol of the US armed forces which served until the introduction of the Beretta 92F as the M9 in 1985.

Some additional information on the Battle of Bud Bagsak from www.bakbakan.org.

Siege of Vicksburg (American Civil War, 19 May 1863)

© US Army Center of Military History

The 13th Infantry Regiment led by General William Sherman was the only Union unit to raise its colours over the Confederate lines during the siege at Stockade Redan on 19 May 1863, earning its motto “First at Vicksburg”.

The American M4 medium tank of WWII was named after him as with all other American tanks and major armoured fighting vehicles which came from the British tradition of naming American tanks after famous American generals during WWII starting with M3 medium tank “Lee” (after American General Robert E. Lee).

More information on the Vicksburg campaign on Wikipedia.

Battle of Chipyong-ni (Korean War, February 1951)

© US Army Center of Military History

A breakout by the 23rd Regimental Combat Team (2nd Infantry Division) together with armour reinforcements from the 5th Cavalry Regiment after three days of defense at Chipyong-ni against massive human wave attacks attempted by overwhelming numbers of Chinese communist troops during the Korean War. A first hand recollection of the battle by then Captain Ansil L. Walker of the 23rd Regimental Combat Team can be read at historynet.com.

Battle of San Juan Hill (Spanish-American War, 1 July 1898)

© US Army Center of Military History

Gatling machineguns of Lieutenant John H. Parker’s Gatling Gun Detachment being used on the offensive to support the frontal assault on entrenched Spanish troops on heavily defended San Juan Hill, Cuba during the Spanish-American War.

Lieutenant John H. Parker was in command of the Gatling Gun Detachment composed of men from four different infantry regiments. Parker believed that his guns, which normally played only a defensive role in battle, could be of decisive importance in the attack by giving fire superiority to the infantry just when most needed. Receiving permission to advance the guns, Parker brought his detachment abreast of the Infantry, in fact ahead of some elements of it, and opened fire. This, the United States Army’s first use of close support machine guns in the attack, was decisive in the capture of San Juan Hill. Lieutenant Parker’s initiative developed an important principle of fire and maneuver — the use of close support machine guns in the attack.

Capture of Ludendorff Bridge (World War II, 7 March 1945)

© US Army Center of Military History

The capture of the Ludendorff bridge during Operation Lumberjack by the Combat Command B, 9th Armored Division and 27th Infantry Regiment which paved the way for the Allies to establish a bridgehead at Remagen as a base for attacks into Germany itself, leading to the eventual defeat of Germany and ending the war in Europe.

Battle of Resaca de la Palma (Mexican-American War, 9 May 1846)

Wallpapers Wednesday : Luminous Arc

A collection of 25 wallpapers featuring characters designed by Kaito Shibano for Marvellous Entertainment’s Nintendo DS tactical game Luminous Arc. Some of my favourites below from the official American site for Luminous Arc by its publisher Altus.

Now the main draw for me when it comes to wallpapers and promotional stuff for games are the “secret/unlockable” downloads. Luminous Arc has two additional unlockable wallpapers if you can guess the correct answer to the question when you select the Lucia wallpaper for download.

© Marvellous Entertainment / Altus USA

The first unlockable wallpaper is the alternative wallpaper of Lucia in a more eye-catching costume than the default white dress (above). Here’s a preview :)
