Art Friday : Dangerous Curves by ReiQ

Reinaldo Quintero or ReiQ as he’s known at deviantART recently released the sixth pack of wallpapers made from a selection of his trademark illustrations of comic style pin-ups with some really dangerous curves. Definitely not for minors :P

Art Friday : John Wallin Liberto’s WWII Military Aviation Art

This post has been lying in the Drafts section for close to a year now while awaiting permission from the artist, Mr John Wallin Liberto, to use his artwork. Seems a bit wasteful to leave a complete post lying in the drafts, so here it is :)

Discovered John’s work from the October 2007 Lite issue of the digital-only 2DArtist magazine where his stunning artwork of a P-51D Mustang in pursuit of a Focke Wulf Fw 190 was published on Page 7 (below).

While John is probably better known for his concept work on games like Gears of War and Battlefield 2142, what really interests me at his official site is the collection of his richly detailed and realistic military aviation art.

I appreciate highly detailed miltary aviation art featuring historically accurate markings and insignia as these symbols and serials on each aircraft are the key to a wealth of interesting information about that particular aircraft, its pilot and the corresponding squadron’s rich combat history.

Take for example, the artwork titled Sturmgruppe Dahl.

© John Wallin Liberto

On the surface, it simply is an illustration of four Focke Wulf Fw190s in flight. Upon googling “Sturmgruppe Dahl”, I realized that these aircraft belonged to the Strurmgruppen (obviously), an elite cadre of volunteer pilots trained to close in and attack massive swarms of Allied bombers at extremely short range (~300m) or even ram the bombers in uparmoured and upgunned Fw 190s.

The rightmost Fw 190A-8 ‘Blue 13′ was the mount of Major Walther Dahl, Kommodore of JG300. The red fuselage band on the aircraft is known as a Reichsverteidigung and denotes that this aircraft was employed in the Defence of the Reich role.

Another painting of a Sturmgruppen aircraft that I like a lot is the Fw 190A-7 ‘White 14′ of Sturmstaffel 1 (above). View the cowling emblem in greater detail at Feldpost Amerika.

Other historical aircraft of note are Fw 190A-8 ‘Black 8′ of IV.(Sturm)/JG3 (above) and Spitfire Mk IXc (MK432/OU-U ‘Baby Bea V’) (below) of 485 Squadron, RNZAF, the first New Zealand squadron formed in the UK during WWII.

© John Wallin Liberto

Last but not least, is the painting that attracted me to his work in the first place. Googling the “Big Beautiful Doll” and its serial “WS-I” reveals information about its pilot, Col. John D. Landers who first served in the Pacific Theatre in the 49th Fighter Group before becoming CO of the 78th Fighter Group in 1945. The Google search also throws up several post-war civilian aircraft including a Canadian Aircraft CA-18 (G-HAEC) painted to resemble this fabulously colourful aircraft as well as several artworks (down!) by other artists of ‘Big Beautiful Doll’.

Visit John Wallin Liberto’s official site for more exciting artwork.

Art Friday : Lovepixel’s Pixelcity Extraordinaire

While artists like eBoy have condensed the essence of entire cities like London, Berlin, Vienna and Singapore into wildly fantastic landscapes the size of your monitor (see previous post), Taiwanese pixel artist Jason Huang aka Lovepixel has gone in the opposite direction and conjured a breathtakingly epic and distinctively Taiwanese cityscape. Expect to see elements of traditional Chinese culture such as signboards labelled in Chinese (but of course) and qigong/taichi practitioners co-existing with Western imports like megamalls, McDonalds and urbane hipsters.

Reminds me of the not-so-good old days ;) Sucks to be on guard duty just opposite a shopping mall - feels so near yet so far

This massive city measures an mind-boggling 10,000 pixels by 10,000 pixels which you can appreciate in its entirety over at Jason’s site. A tiny thumbnail of the whole city simply doesn’t do the original masterpiece justice therefore I have chosen the next best option and cut out some of the more interesting snippets above. I still recommend you to hop over to Lovepixel right away to check out the entire cityscape - it’s that fantastic!

Marvel and be amazed at this gorgeous pixel city at Lovepixel. Click on the image to enter the site where more marvellous works await.

Art Friday : Fantasy Art - Paizo Style!

Now before I started writing stuff for The Download Munkey, the first thing that came to mind when someone mentioned fantasy art to me, was the classic stuff from Wizards of the Coast’s Advanced Dungeons and Dragons (AD&D).

After discovering Paizo Publishing’s blog not too long ago, I think I now know much better :) Actually I read about Paizo Publishing after discovering Blue Moon Rising months ago, but it was only recently that I found the RSS link to the Paizo blog.

Now, I usually associate Wizards of the Coast stuff with the “classical” notions of fantasy brawny male warriors in full plate armour and busty female warriors and wizards in robes and female elves resembling human females with pointy ears. There’s nothing wrong with all these of course, but Paizo’s artworks have dispelled some of those stereotypical ideas of what and how fantasy beings should look like.

The fantasy art lovers among us are definitely in for a treat when visiting Paizo’s blog. Posts which explore the worlds that serve as the settings for Paizo’s games are usually accompanied by fantastic artworks. And they’re not just the tiny resized images like on this blog, but high-res, high quality pieces like this below if you bother to click on them (on the blog, not here :P ).

Yet another artwork by Wayne Reynolds from the November 2007 archives, this time being the cover of Pathfinder #6.

From Carnival of Tears, an illustration of a Cold Rider, a fey prince warped by the corrupting magics of the Witch Queen of Irrisen. More about the Cold Riders from the November 2007 archives. If I’m not wrong, this piece is done by John Gravato, who also does illustrations for Warhammer 40,000.

An unfortunate victim of a dreaded torture device - The Iron Maiden - from the January 2008 archives. From the GameMastery Module : Hangman’s Noose.

This piece above illustrating the fantasy races in a different light from “Traditional Fantasy” as shown in the beta release of Paizo Pathfinder : Roleplaying Game. Download the beta release and buy the print edition if you like it enough :)

Art Friday : IconFactory - The Best Icons!

IconFactory has always my first stop for icons because these guys not only create excellent original icon sets but also marvellous sets inspired by popular culture. These aren’t just collectable icons, they’re miniature works of art!

For instance, where else can you find an icon of those grappling hooks that the Fremen use to ride on the Shai-Hulud, massive sandworms of Arrakis made famous by the sci-fi classic Dune?

© The Iconfactory

Other than icons inspired by famous works of fiction, there’s also loads of icons movies from blockbusters and bestsellers to cult classics. Anyone fancy an icon of the Bride’s sword from Kill Bill?

© The Iconfactory

Speaking of swords, there’s even an icon set devoted to the swords of the Chinese comic Feng Yun (later adapted as the movie Storm Riders).

© The Iconfactory

Want more movie-related icons? My choice picks include the icon sets for Star Wars, War of the Worlds, V for Vendetta and even Austin Powers. Groovy, baby :)

© The Iconfactory

There’s also plenty of nostalgic stuff for kids who grew up on a diet of 80s cartoons and TV shows. Remember T-Bob from M.A.S.K? Or the butt ugly monsters of Ultraman? Classic Transformers? Relive those memories at IconFactory!

© The Iconfactory

Quite a few game-inspired icon sets from the classic Archon to relatively new games like Patapon.

© The Iconfactory

For the original designs, I especially like the horror/Halloween-themed ones. Bride of Macabre is one of my favourites, along with Vintage Halloween and Dia De Los Muertos (not technically Halloween, but …)
