Art Friday : Dan LuVisi’s Portraits of Movie Characters & More!

Dan LuVisi’s stunning portrait of an unmasked Predator first caught my eye in Issue 7 of Artzmania. This artwork is part of his BLACK series in his deviantART gallery in which he paints portraits of some of the most recognisable faces from movies.

The Predator is just one of the three works related to the Aliens vs Predator universe - the other two being a Alien Warrior and a grim Colonial Marine - I just love the glistening carapace and salivating jaws of the Alien Warrior :)

Since then, he has gone on to paint the three major characters of the recent Batman movie, The Dark Knight for his BLACK series, two of them being the Caped Crusader himself and his arch-nemesis The Joker (below)

There’s other movie characters in his gallery, of the charmingly eccentric Captain Sparrow and of King Kong locked in mortal combat with a ferocious V-Rex. There’s tutorials for this particular piece if you’re interested in the techniques used in creating this piece.

Gamers aren’t left out either - there’s Master Chief from Halo as well as Army of Two and Crysis art amongst others in his deviantART gallery.

Now if you’re thinking that Dan LuVisi only does portraits of characters from popular culture, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by his original pieces like this oddly attractive shark-headed humanoid - I’m still trying to figure out where the tentacles come from :)

Or this lopsided fight between a heroic knight and a massive dragon/T-Rex hybrid.

Check out Dan LuVisi’s deviantART gallery and view the above pieces in their full resolution. Don’t forget to visit his blog too - there’s a cool warrior panda concept exclusive to the blog :)

Wallpapers Wednesday : Art for Peace - Retired Weapons

One day when the people on Earth decide to live in peace with each other, hopefully tanks and grenades can finally become ornate flower vases. While I’m skeptical that this will actually happen, it’s not wrong to hope, isn’t it?

12 wallpapers in total from Retired Weapons, an art project intiated by Yuji Tokuda and Junya Ishikawa in 2005 and dedicated to promoting peace through art. Some of the more recognizable weapons of war below as converted into harmless flowerpots.

Found this off Tokyo Mango a while back but I don’t really recall how I got there:)

Military Tuesday : Tiger I Renders by Kyoshi Harada

Japanese 3D military modeller Kyoshi Harada has updated his Polygon Model site recently with cutaway renders of arguably the most well-known German tank of WWII - the PzKpfw VI Tiger I in sand-brown colours. According to PanzerAce, This particular Tiger I is commanded by SS-Unterscharführer Willi Otterbein of the 1st Company of the 101st (Heavy) SS Panzer Battalion. The famous tank ace Michael Wittmann was the commander of the 2nd company of this same battalion.

While I’ve seen event more detailed diagrams of the Tiger in books, these renders are probably some of the best that you’ll find online plus they’re rendered in sufficiently high detail (especially the turret) for identifying stuff like the armoured periscopes for the gunner and commander as well as appreciating the size of the Maybach HL230 engine and the massive breech of the 88mm KwK 36 L/56 cannon of the Tiger I. The stowage areas for the cannon rounds are also shown clearly in these renders.

Wallpapers Wednesday : Double Fine Wallpapers

Double Fine’s artist Scott C’s wallpapers remind of work done by illustrator Quentin Blake for Roald Dahl’s books which I read as a child and explains why I find Scott’s work so appealing. Besides, his work also reminds me of the artwork for TerrorBull Games’ satirical board game on the War on Terror.

On the same page, you’ll find wallpapers by other Double Fine creatives. I like this one by Nathan Stapley very much too :)

And you’ll find wallpapers of the indie game PsychonautsB as well, since Double Fine Productions are none other than the game studio who conceptualized and developed this critcally-acclaimed game. I played the demo and loved the surrealistic settings in but failed too miserably on the jumping parts to truly enjoy it.

Art Friday : Vektorika Magazine

Can’t remember how I found Vektorika Magazine, a vector art e-mag produced by Godot Guntoro of VektorJunkie.com but I thought it might be interesting to others since I discovered some really good stuff in several issues. Plus every issue’s free so there’s really no excuse not to check it out.

While my main interest is in digital illustration, I do favour the more abstract and stylized forms of vector graphics once in a while. Variety is the spice of life, isn’t it? :)

Vektorika Magazine is essentially a themed collection of works contributed by vector artists around the world with a sprinkling of interviews (starting from issue #7). There’s currently 10 issues available for download, each < 5 MB with the newer issues averaging 10 MB each.

As usual, some sample pages are shown below. All graphics are copyright of their respective creators, of course.

Bigbros Workshop as featured in Issue #3 Superstar Issue

Aram from Issue #4 Erotika Issue. Some of the submitted works for this issue (and some others, notably #5, #6 and #8) are definitely NSFW as the title implies :)

Verie from Issue #7 Rock & Roll Issue . Easily my favourite issue.

Colin Lee from Issue #7 Rock & Roll Issue

Rosso from Issue #8 Love Issue

Samuel Juving from Issue #9 Asiana Issue. Second favourite issue :)

Wisnu Suhandoko from Issue #10 Character Design Issue.

I recommend viewing these e-mags at 75% actual size in your favourite PDF reader - the pages look much cleaner and clearer this way without the annoying pixellation which really detracts from the enjoyment of some really awesome graphics in there.

Download Vektorika Magazine.
