Wallpapers Wednesday : Springfield Punx Jumble Wallpaper

I always enjoy collecting wallpapers featuring ensembles of the various characters in games and comics. Can’t recall the exact word now but I remember reading about a collective noun for superheroes … (Wordlab suggested fraility and a forumer at PPRuNe mentioned halo)

Basically, I meant walllpapers like this one from Marvel Comics, …

Art Friday : Simpsonized @ Springfield Punx

While Spiderman and Batman are unlikely to show up in the Simpsons’ neighbourhood of Springfield anytime soon, I’m sure that fans of these superheroes and other famous figures from popular culture will be delighted with this growing collection of Simpsonized characters over at Springfield Punx. Featured at Deadlicious not too long back, Springfield Punx is the brainchild of artist Dean Fraser who has been posting his fan art creations of Simpsonized characters online since June 2008.

Some of my favourites below. Artworks are copyright Dean Fraser, character and their likenesses copyright of their respective owners.

Spiderman

The Joker as seen in The Dark Knight.

Bond. James Bond

Skeletor from He-Man : Masters of the Universe.

Mr Spock – the only character I recognize from Star Trek :P

Rorschach from The Watchmen – Haven’t read Alan Moore’s The Watchmen yet but Rorschach is one cool character. First heard of The Watchmen after finding a papercraft Rorschach at Cubee Craft.

This October also happens to be month of Marvel at Springfield Punx and fans get to see some of the most-recognized names in the Marvel meta-universe like Captain America, Iron Man, The Hulk, and Dr Doom Simpsonized. How cool is that?

Captain America

The Punisher

The Dark Knight

Alright, Nuffnang just offered me free tickets to the latest Batman movie – The Dark Knight – last week in exchange for an sponsored post about this movie. Since I was going to watch the movie with thoo2 anyway, so I thought to myself “Hey, why not?” :D

© Warner Bros

The official The Dark Knight website @ www.darkknight-asia.com is chockful of downloadable goodies from PDF posters to wallpapers to adorn your desktops. And yes, there’s a streaming video trailer if you wish to catch glimpses of Batman’s couple of hot rides :) Some stills from the trailer below.

Batman making a grand entrance with style in his Bat Tumbler – looks like what Automobili Lamborghini would build if they dabbled with tanks instead of supercars

The perpetually unsmiling Dark Knight and his gruffy-looking arch nemesis The Joker have been gracing covers on the likes of local entertainment mags 8 Days, LIME and of course the July edition of the movie mag, FiRST these days (IMHO the best cover of the three).

© SPH Magazines Pte Ltd

That’s just the tip of the iceberg of The Dark Knight madness since there’s been a slew of Batman and Joker’s related fan material all around the web for the past few months, my favourites being Dan LuVisi’s portraits of two of the main protagonists in the The Dark Knight which I think deserves special mention. And let’s not forget the upcoming Lego Batman game which also features most of the characters from The Dark Knight :D

© Lego

As for the movie itself, I’m glad that it turned out far better than I expected (otherwise I would be extremely guilty and embarrassed that you’re still reading up to here :P )

My last impression of Gotham City from 1992’s Batman Begins was a dark, decaying and extremely depressing city of frightened citizens and I was thankful that the same city portrayed in The Dark Knight looks far less gloomy and much more suitable for human inhabitation with the additional bonus of making appreciation of the film much easier on the eyes :)

The main draw of The Dark Knight however, is not the self-appointed guardian of Gotham himself, not his fancy rides but the wild and unkempt Joker himself. Or specifically the late Heath Ledger (Brokeback Mountain, The Brothers Grimm) himself, who put in an amazingly mesmerizing performance as the deranged criminal genius who revels in unleashing wanton destruction and mayhem in Gotham City on top of brutal cold-blooded murders of his foes, minions and innocent civilians alike.

Heath Ledger, with his convincing portrayal of The Joker as a man with an uncannily thorough understanding of the human psyche who always seems to succeed despite his half-baked and haphazard schemes, steals the show whenever he’s onscreen which makes the whole 153 mins of the show breeze by.

OK, at this point I’m supposed to ask you readers to check out the official www.darkknight-asia.com to watch the trailer but I won’t since I’m sure you’re already itching to stop reading and go catch The Joker (and Batman) in action at your nearest cinemas now :D

Art Friday : Bounce Back To Life – Uniquely Singaporean Comics by Daniel Wang

Just realized that I have been following Daniel Wang’s entertaining online comics at Bounce Back To Life for almost a year now from a link from My Life with IT :) I’m continually amazed by his vivid imagination and ability to find humour out of everyday situations in his comic strips.

Daniel’s comics usually revolve around local events and situations, like the recent Singapore Toy & Comic Convention. Here’s his idea of the event and the type of potential visitors partially inspired by The Bitter Stickgirl and Sweeney Todd :P

© Daniel Wang

Some of his classics : I’m pretty sure that only Singaporeans or people residing in Singapore for quite a while will fully understand this comic. Below are the words of Yazid, designer of the national costume for the Singaporean representative of Miss Galaxy. What design will he come up with?

From Romance is A Strange Thing. Notice the differences?

And this one featuring his original idea for an arcade machine inspired by Japanese horror flicks. How did this girl get herself photographed this way? Find out in Close! Goddammit!

© Daniel Wang

What’s Mr Tech Support so excited about? Find out in Happy New Year. Nope, it’s nothing to do with the New Year holiday :P

For a peek into the process of how Daniel draws each of his comic strips, be sure to check out his FAQ.

Wallpapers Wednesday : Marvel Official Wallpapers

Finally found some time to look through the 1200+ wallpapers downloaded from Marvel’s official wallpaper archive. While I know that Marvel holds the copyrights to some of the coolest and most recognizable superheroes due to their movie tie-ins, there’s many other cool yet lesser known characters in their massive stable of superheroes (and supervillains) …

© Marvel

And zombies. I absolutely love zombies, especially zombified Wolverine :)

© Marvel

Most wallpapers feature household names like Captain America, The Hulk, Spiderman, Fantastic Four and Wolverine & the rest of the X-Men I believe all these heroes have their own major feature films with the sole exception of Captain America.

© Marvel

There’s some interesting images of these superheroes in their original costumes as shown on the covers of the first issues of the Fantastic Four, The Avengers, and Daredevil. And yes, that yellow tinman in The Avengers #1 IS Ironman.

© Marvel

While I’m absolutely devastated at the omission of my favourite Marvel villain Omega Red (and there’s no Blackheart in there either), at least several of the major villians are represented, notably Magneto, Venom, Dr Doom and Bullseye.

© Marvel

Some other interesting characters that I found while browsing these wallpapers include Black Panther who (concidentally?) looks like Batman, Deadpool, Moon Knight, Penance (vs Wolverine), Ronin (seen here battling Elektra), grotesque Man-Thing and some other characters in Annihilation : Conquest and Thunderbolts.

© Marvel

Marvel also publishes several series which have some beautiful characters like the supermodel superheroes in Heroes for Hire :)

© Marvel

I also like the character designs in series like Amazing Fantasy, Mystical Arcana and Daughters of Dragon.

UPDATE (12 Aug 2008) : Just identified the character on the left of the second wallpapers as Death’s Head 3.0 while reading up on Waffen SS ‘Totenkopf’ divisions.

© Marvel

I found the Marvel Illustrated series rather interesting, which are essentially comic versions of classics like the Greek epic The Iliad. I would love to get this one if a trade paperback exists :)
