Games Thursday : Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine Trailer

An upcoming console game featuring the elite superhuman warriors from Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 universe. And of course, it’s the familiar blue Space Marines from Primarch Roboute Guilliman’s Ultramarines chapter again, a chapter which has featured prominently in most games bearing the license to Games Workshop’s grim vision of the far future – from leading a team of Terminators to explore and cleanse space hulks in Space Crusade (1992), awesome tactical squad-based action in Chaos Gate (1998) to a cameo appearance in the singleplayer campaign in the original Dawn of War (2004) and even in the PSP game Squad Command (2007).

A mix of CG and gameplay snippets in the trailer released at the official site @ www.spacemarine.com and at THQ UK which devotes significant footage time to one of the space marines wielding an unusual weapon looking suspiciously like a thunder hammer commonly equipped by Space Marine Terminators.

I know I haven’t been keeping up with the latest rules for the tabletop game but such a powerful weapon in the hands of an ordinary Tactical or Assault Marine looks just plain ridiculous. Besides, swatting Orks around with a huge hammer doesn’t seem to provide the same feel of more conventional assault marines jumping into the fray with bolt pistols firing at point blank and then proceeding to stab and parry with whirring chainswords – that IMHO is much more bloody, messy and WH40K-ish :)

Art Friday : Warhammer 40,000 Papercraft

Either there is a growing community of papercraft modellers who are getting into the Warhammer 40,000 universe or it’s the other way round :) Sorry about not posting photos of the actual finished models – I collect tons of these papercraft plans but I never seem to find time to print and assemble them. There’re photos at the always awesome Papercraft Paradise where I saw these models.

&

First is a 35cm tall Space Marine paper model by BlueDragon over at Action Papercraft. A smaller 22cm tall Space Marine designed by Niebie is also available at the same site. A free Pepakura Viewer is required to view the PDO files.

&

Next is a magnificent Space Marine Dreadnought by Tomas Lukacovic with the choice of either Blood Angels or Ultramarines colours – purity seals sold separately. 280+(!) parts make up the main body with 50+ parts for the Assault Cannon, Lascannon, Power Fist or Flamer arms each.

Download these Space Marine papercraft plans here and here and the Space Marine Dreadnought (two files – FINAL.zip contains the body and Assault Cannon, Power Fist and Flamer arms, FINAL2.zip contains the Lascannon arms).

Wallpapers Wednesday : More Warhammer 40,000 : Dawn of War II Wallpapapers

Wallpapers for the four factions, Space Marines, Orks, Eldar and Tyranids have been released on the official Warhammer 40,000 : Dawn of War II site.

© THQ

On top of these, additional wallpapers of the faction heroes are also available at the official blog. Currently only the wallpapers for the Space Marine and Ork heroes have been released with the best looking model being the Ork Warboss IMHO.

If that’s not enough for you, there’s always the wallpaper featuring the cover art for the official Dawn of War II novel published by Black Library.

Download wallpapers from the official Dawn of War II site, the official Dawn of War II blog (specifically here and here) and from Black Library.

Art Friday : Favourite Illustrators of Warhammer 40,000 (VII) – Nacho Fernandez (nachomon)

At first thought, toon style illustrations might seem totally unsuitable for depicting the grim and gory Warhammer 40,000 universe but Nacho Fernandez’s illustrations just manage to fuse the lighthearted playfulness of toons with Warhammer 40,000 without losing the enticingly dark flavour of Games Workshop’s sci-fi meta-universe.

© Nacho Fernandez

I first encountered his work in the form of the Imperial Fists Commander in the Firebase Wallpaper pack (which I won’t feature here again because yellow isn’t my favourite colour :P ). Personal prejudices aside, I just feel that that his Imperial Fists Commander isn’t representative of the far cooler works in his deviantART gallery where he’s known as nachomon. Above are two of my favourites – I just had to pick the Eversor Assassin and Chaplain Savaal because skull-faced characters are cool!

© Nacho Fernandez

Some more cool Warhammer 40,000 stuff above – Techmarine Dreadnought Tjorvi and an assortment of other characters from a murderous Khorne Berzerker, a heavily-armed Tau Commander to a rampaging Tyrant Guard of Hive Fleet Leviathan.

And for the more artistically inclined visitors, his tutorial on drawing a Space Marine should prove quite useful for learning to draw like his Iron Dragons Space Marine.

© Nacho Fernandez

All is not lost if you’re not a Warhammer 40,000 fan of course since there’re equally fabulous non Games Workshop related works in his gallery, like this piece featuring a faceoff between Space Marines of two different universes, Dreamcast Transformer and a vicious Alien Xenomorph.

The cover for his Midnight Rockers #1 is pretty impressive too.

Wallpapers Wednesday : Warhammer 40,000 Wallpapers from Firebase Magazine

A set of five awesome wallpapers from the free quarterly Warhammer 40,000 fanzine Firebase as featured on the Bell of Lost Souls. Artwork by Jason Heuser, Nacho Fernandez, Tim Divar and Pavel Zolotkov.

© Tim Divar

Tim Divar’s artwork of an advancing Adeptus Mechanicus column is my personal favourite – artwork that feature these supplicants of the Machine God are simply hard to come by, much less excellent ones like this – even the Black Library’s official Art of Warhammer 40,000 book dedicates only a few measly pages to these half-man, half-machine servants of the Imperium.

© Pavel Zolotoko

Don’t miss out on other Warhammer 40,000 artwork from these artists – check out Jason Heuser’s artworks of a Necron Warrior and the Thousand Sons Primarch Magnus The Red, Nachos Fernandez’s Eversor Assassin and Battle for Macragge and finally, Tim Divar’s Eldar vs Tau and Lost and The Damned. I’m quite disappointed in not being able to locate Pavel Zolotoko’s website because his Slaanesh Chaos Space Marine is downright nasty stuff.

Download these wallpapers from Bell of Lost Souls.
