Wallpapers Wednesday : Lego Batman

Wallpapers for the Batman range of Lego mini-figs. Can’t wait for the upcoming Lego Batman : The Videogame to be released later this September since I’m a big fan of Traveller’s Tales games - their previous Lego Star Wars : The Videogame made me into a Star Wars fan.
Hopefully a romp through a Legofied Gotham City will change my opinion of the depressingly dark and gloomy Batman universe.

Also check out the six promotional comics for a quick primer on the major villains (below) as well as Batman’s garage of Legofied vehicles. Almost all the villains are present except for the strange omission of Catwoman. Hmmm….

More Dark Knight goodness in the exclusive debut trailer for Lego Batman : The Videogame which you can watch or download from Gametrailers.

© Lego / Traveller Tales

Travellers Tales has another soon to be released Lego game in the form of Lego Indiana Jones : The Original Adventures but I think the Dark Knight is far cooler - although I have to admit that the exotic locations in Lego Indiana Jones as shown in the wallpapers do have their attractions :)

Apparently, Lego no longer has the Harry Potter license so I’m wondering which license they would use for the next Lego game -a Lego minifig version of The Lord of the Rings would be fantastic :)

Download the wallpapers or view the comics for Lego Batman.

Military Tuesday : Mongol HD Trailer - The Rise of Genghis Khan

A HD trailer for Sergei Bodrov’s film on the infamous Temüjin who rose from a impoverished tribesman to become leader of the united Mongol tribes and later founder of the vast Mongol empire which stretched from central Asia to modern-day cities of Kiev in the borthwest and Baghdad in the southwest at its peak under his son Ögedei Khan.

© Picturehouse

Interestingly, the English version of the official Russian site names the film as Mongol : Part One which means that there might be a sequel to this film which received a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film for the 2007 Academy Awards.

From the trailer released at Apple Trailers, it appears that Mongol covers mainly Temüjin’s early years as the son of a Mongolian chieftain to his capture by raiders of another Mongolian tribe and later, his marriage with Borte at the age of 16. The abduction and subsequent rescue of his wife from Merkit tribesmen (below) is also portrayed in this film.

Some captures from the HD trailer.

Heavy cavalry with dual sabres - not too sure if these cavalry were Mongolian since I have never read about them being armed or armoured in this way.

Wonder which nation did this banner represent?

The Mongol hordes

While Genghis Khan was definitely a great and brillant leader, the extremely brutal result of some of the Mongol campaigns must have left a massive stain on his legacy - I read over at War and Game that an estimated 80,000 to 1,000,000 citzens were massacred after the successful siege of Baghdad in 1258.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this film will be shown in Singapore when it’s released later this year :)

Today’s art site of the day is the wonderful Skull-A-Day which promises a daily artistic interpretation the human skull using a very eclectic variety of styles and mediums, ranging from traditional oil painting to often surprising materials as in Skull #168, my No.1 favourite of the 300+(!) skulls on display at Skull-A-Day. As of today, there’s only 53 more to go before Another Limited Rebellion’s aim of making a skull a day is finally fulfilled.

Games Thursday : Aliens - The Board Game (Flash Version)

Discovered this cool Flash version of Leading Edge Games’ Aliens : The Board Game from the quite excellent Games for Gamers site which regularly features free games as well as other game-related software (game engines & the like).

After playing the easiest mission The Reactor, the first impression I get is that it’s much easier than to get into the computerized Aliens : The Board Game than the fanmade SpaceHulk-SP for Games Workshop’s similar Space Hulk. While I much prefer the Space Marine Terminators and Genestealers over the Colonial Marines and alien Xenomorphs, the gameplay in Aliens : The Boardgame is much faster-paced and definitely easier to learn and play.

Before beginning any of the three missions (The Reactor, Operations and Rescue Newt), you have to first set the team order for the Colonial Marines in your squad to decide which marine gets his turn first. Criteria for setting this order includes the type of weapon carried by each marine and the action points of each individual marine. I usually assign the pistol wielding marines to start their turns first since relying on them to kill any remaining alien after your heavy weapons marines have all completed their actions is usually a fatal mistake.

Your marines are equipped with an assortment of weapons - pistols, flame units, shotguns, machineguns and pulse carbines - the shotgun and flame units having impressive stopping power at close range. However, the flame unit quickly becomes a liability when your fellow marines become locked in melee combat with the ferocious xenomorphs as a single blast from the flame unit quickly immolates both combatants. The pulse carbine available in Operations and Rescue Newt comes with a powerful grenade launcher for clearing packs of Xenomorphs but is equally capable of wounding or killing your own marines if used improperly or the grenade falls short of the intended target. Thankfully, each alien will succumb to a successful hit while marines are slightly tougher and can withstand 2 hits before incapacitation.

Last man standing running

To achieve your objectives, each marine has either 2 or 3 action points which he/she can use to move and/or shoot in any sequence with each action taking up a single action point. There’s also an option of expending one or more action points to aim your shot for a higher hit probability.

Being a computerised remake of the board game, line of sight is automatically calculated of course and all targets which can be hit from the current position are marked with a red crosshair which makes it easy to choose your options for the current marine. Unfortunately it’s sometimes quite hard to pick out those xenomorphs spotted by other squad members due to the dark environments.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to continue to the next mission with only one survivor

As mentioned earlier, there are three missions which can be played singly or if you’re hardcore enough, start with the first mission The Reactor and continue to Operations with any survivors from the first onslaught and finally culminating in a confrontation with the Alien Queen in Rescue Newt.

The Reactor is a straightforward mission whereby you have to move as many marines as possible to the waiting APC at the other end of the corridor while continually being assailed by Xenomorphs from all sides.

Operations (top) and Rescue Newt (bottom)

Operations and Rescue Newt are much more complex missions with multiple objectives. You’ll want to read the tutorial to understand what you have to achieve in these two missions since there’s no instructions available once you’re dropped into a mission.

All in all, Aliens : The Board Game is a wonderful choice for a short tactical game. The Reactor can definitely be completed in 5 to 10 mins but I haven’t remotely gotten anywhere in the other two missions to calculate the time needed :(

Play Aliens : The Board Game.

Art Friday : Cubee Craft - Marshmallow Man, Master Chief, Imperial Stormtrooper Paper Toys

Haven’t been recommending much papercraft apart from Shin Tanaka’s Spiky Babies these days despite the glut of excellent models being showcased at two of the papercraft blogs, Papercraft Paradise and Papercraft World that I visit quite frequently.

Today I’m proud to present Chris Beaumont’s cool Cubee Craft series, mainly for the fact that he has made one of my favourite 80’s cartoon characters, the cute fluffy Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from The Real Ghostbusters, into an equally adorable paper toy.

© Chris Beaumont

Chris has also transformed quite a number of other characters from popular culture into paper toys, ranging from games - Master Chief from Halo, anime - Salchiel from Neon Genesis Evangelion, to comic superhero Rockeeter and movies such as the iconic Imperial Stormtrooper from Star Wars. There’s even a limited edition paper toy available for download until 20 March 2008 to commemorate Nine Inch Nails’ new album Ghosts I-IV. What’s even more amazing is that these toys are designed as snap together papercraft without the need for messy glue and adhesives :)

Imperial Stormtrooper & Salchiel templates

Chris also promises a new paper toy every week, so it’ll be pretty interesting to see what he comes up with, especially when his inspirations for new characters come from such a broad spectrum of popular culture influences. I think a Pac-Man paper toy would be a cool addition to the series :D

Read about Chris and his Cubee Craft collection at Urban Retro Lifestyle which is a wonderful place to visit if you’re into urban art, designer/vinyl toys and other cool stuff (who isn’t :) )
