Random Monday : Halloween Cubees

Halloween-inspired papercraft from BadCat Designs as featured on cubeelog, the official blog for Chris Beaumont’s Cubee Craft series.

A set of spooky-looking cats that require no glue and tape to assemble just like the other Cubees – simply print, cut, fold and enjoy! Count Catula is my favourite of the five Scare-D-Cats – always had a soft spot for pale aristocats in black cloaks with bloodshot eyes and pearl white fangs :) Moldy green Zombie Cat is rather cool too.

There’s more Halloween Cubees (seven to be exact) at the official Halloween section of Cubee Craft where Jack O’ Lanterns, Werewolf, Frankenstein and a cute little ghost await you.

Art Friday : Cool Papercraft Links From MIT

Guess what I found at MIT (yes, the famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology) – two very cool papercraft sites recommended by the Toy Product Design course at the MIT OpenCourseware site.

© PaperRobots1999.com

The first one is PaperRobots1999.com where you can find plans for building a series of papercraft figures with articulated limbs, which of course makes them far more posable than the typical static papermodels. Don’t let the site name fool you since it’s not all paper robots over there – there’s Spiderman and Ash Williams from the Army of Darkness among the classic Transformers like Optimus Prime, Megatron and even a transformable Jetfire.

The other papercraft site featured was Fwis’ Readymech series – somewhat similiar to the designer papercraft of Shin Tanaka. The main draw of these papertoys are the colourful illustrations on the majority of these cute little toys. Some of my faves below.

Random Monday : Sakai Heavy Industries Papercraft

First seen on the Papercraft Paradise, these cool road roller (aka steamroller) scale models are official downloadable papercraft from Sakai Heavy Industries and represent a selection of their many road roller models. The detailed parts for each vehicle are printed clearly in a very high quality PDF – there’s no blurry or jagged lines in these PDFs.

The TZ701 (40+ parts) and GW750 (75+ parts) seem to the two Sakai vehicles that are commonly seen at local roadworks. Gotta take a closer look at those vehicles next time I see them to identify the exact model numbers.

Specialized road construction vehicles like these road rollers and pavers happen to be my third favourite construction vehicles after excavators and those huge Liebherr/Terex truck cranes. Now to look for a papercraft excavator :)

Art Friday : Cubee Craft – Marshmallow Man, Master Chief, Imperial Stormtrooper Paper Toys

Haven’t been recommending much papercraft apart from Shin Tanaka’s Spiky Babies these days despite the glut of excellent models being showcased at two of the papercraft blogs, Papercraft Paradise and Papercraft World that I visit quite frequently.

Today I’m proud to present Chris Beaumont’s cool Cubee Craft series, mainly for the fact that he has made one of my favourite 80’s cartoon characters, the cute fluffy Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from The Real Ghostbusters, into an equally adorable paper toy.

© Chris Beaumont

Chris has also transformed quite a number of other characters from popular culture into paper toys, ranging from games – Master Chief from Halo, anime – Salchiel from Neon Genesis Evangelion, to comic superhero Rockeeter and movies such as the iconic Imperial Stormtrooper from Star Wars. There’s even a limited edition paper toy available for download until 20 March 2008 to commemorate Nine Inch Nails’ new album Ghosts I-IV. What’s even more amazing is that these toys are designed as snap together papercraft without the need for messy glue and adhesives :)

Chris also promises a new paper toy every week, so it’ll be pretty interesting to see what he comes up with, especially when his inspirations for new characters come from such a broad spectrum of popular culture influences. I think a Pac-Man paper toy would be a cool addition to the series :D

Read about Chris and his Cubee Craft collection at Urban Retro Lifestyle which is a wonderful place to visit if you’re into urban art, designer/vinyl toys and other cool stuff (who isn’t :) )
