Wallpapers Wednesday : Order of War

Four wallpapers for the WWII RTS Order of War. Yes, WWII games have been done to death but hopefully this one is different as it garnered a Best Strategy Game Runner-up award at E3 2009 by IGN (along with three other games I must add :D – Hearts of Iron 3, East India Company and R.U.S.E)

© Square Enix Ltd

It’s developed by Wargaming.Net (Massive Assault, Massive Assault Network 2) and published by none other by Square Enix of Final Fantasy fame and surprisingly for a Square Enix game, it’s gonna be available for the PC. Yay!

Download these wallpapers or the recently released demo at the official Order of War site at orderofwar.co.uk.

Wallpapers Wednesday : Rocket Riot

Originally caught these Rocket Riot wallpapers off THQ UK but the links there were broken :(

Rocket Riot is a side scrolling action game from Dutch games studio Codeglue and features a cute and rather unique art style. Apparently, it’s also the first Dutch developed game to be sold at Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) too :)

Wallpapers Wednesday : Dragon Sky

This pair of characters depicted on the wallpapers for Korean MMORPG Dragon Sky reminds me of the couple Yang Guo (杨过) and the ethereal Xiao Long Nu (小龙女 or if literally translated – little dragon lady) from Louis Cha (金庸)’s famous wuxia novel The Legend of The Condor Heroes.

Then again, it’s entirely possible there might be a similiar folklore or story in Korea :) And besides the Chinese title of this game (龙天气) translates to Dragon Air (or more accurately Weather as Kayv pointed out) which definitely doesn’t correspond to Louis Cha’s novel.

Anyway I first discovered this game via Kim Kang San or Manager BP’s CGSociety gallery where he showcases some of his concepts done for Dragon Sky (above), which are unfortunately nowhere to be found on the official site. Oh, and if you really have to know, it was startdrawing.org which introduced me to Manager BP’s fabulous stuff :)

The officially released concepts aren’t too bad though a couple (above) remind me more of Samurai Shodown :)

Download these wallpapers from the official website for Dragon Sky.

Wallpapers Wednesday : Classic BattleTech

Wallpapers of ‘Mechs from the Classic BattleTech universe, originally published by FASA and now by Catalyst Game Labs since 2007.

© Catalyst Game Labs

I have always been a fan of ‘Mechs and giant robots, especially after experiencing the marvellous Mechwarrior 2 on an ancient 486 some ten years back – the feel of piloting a blocky mess of polygons with a incredible arsenal of death-dealing firepower was an intensely novel experience for that time.

Image stolen from Jay Barnson’s very readable Tales of the Rampant Coyote blog.

The later sequels didn’t have that same magical feel despite their superior graphics – perhaps it was technically the same gameplay in a prettier package of sorts or maybe it was just my nostalgia for Mechwarrior 2, plain and simple :)

OK, I think I should stop rambling now but these wallpapers for Classic BattleTech do bring back good memories of those good old days. Below, I showcase several of my favourite pieces, like this faceoff between a Timbercat (left) and a skull faced Atlas (right).

Now this one below is reminds me of the box art for Mechwarrior 4.

One for Gundam fans, does this look like a Zaku I (note pinkish red monoeye) with a Darth Vaderish head or is it just me?

Wallpapers Wednesday : Theatre of War 2 : Africa 1943

Wallpapers from the second installment of Battlefront’s Theatre of War, set in the deserts of North Africa in 1943 – the year which saw the first major engagement between the Americans and Field Marshal Rommel’s veteran Afrika Korps in the Mediterranean Theater at the Battle of the Kasserine Pass.

Probably gonna try the Theatre of War 2 demo and write about it if I like it enough – I found the interface of the first game too awkward for a RTS the last time I played the demo. I try to get my hands on the demos for every single games published by Battlefront though, my favourite game is still Afrika Korps from their seminal Combat Mission series.
