Art Friday : The Weird and Wonderful World of Afu Chan aka aznmextofu

Afu Chan or aznmextofu @ deviantART has a knack for conjuring up some of the most wildly fantastic artwork that I’ve ever laid my eyes on – quite reminds me of several of my dreams in the past, only much weirder, more violent and most definitely much more fascinating and intriguing :)

One of my favourites is Fishbones Attack – a tie wearing horseman lets loose a blast from his shotgun on the rolling gunmen-infested deck of a ship with giant fish (tuna?) leaping into the air in the background. Also notice the nice little detail where the rear hoof of our horseman’s black charger has stomped on the left hand of one of the fallen gunmen. And that unfortunate guy’s probably isn’t dead yet because his face has just turned very red  All very odd which makes Afu’s stuff so interesting.

Something’s about to turn real ugly soon as these two girls stand by patiently with weapons loaded and ready to ROCK!

Street Fight 07 – a martial arts movie-like scene set in the streets with the ragdoll-like agility of Matrix.

Street Fighter II done in Afu’s distinctive style.

The Lugaidh Brothers and Sisters – a band of unconventional pugilists with totally unkungfu-ish sounding names :) From left to right : Frank, Stephanie, Cindy, Paul, Monica, David and the guy up front is Lugaidh himself. The word Nepenthes is also the genus name for the carnivorous pitcher plants.

Swordfights in the sky – City of Violence – ever seen a punch so powerful that it breaks a passing airliner into two  – Bruce Lee’s famous one inch punch doesn’t even come close :)

… and in a church with walls pockmarked with bullet holes (Battle Royal 08). The funny thing is no one seems to have managed to hit and shatter any of the stained glass windows yet :P

Wallpapers Wednesday : House of The Dead : Overkill

Stylish comic-style wallpapers for House of The Dead : Overkill developed by Headstrong Games for the Wii.

© Sega

You can also download a fansite kit where you get 23 render shots of the four bosses in House of The Dead : Overkill, including two detailed shots of their feet. Only the leg shot of Brutus is displayed below – the other one legshot for Screamer is a bit too grotesque for public viewing :)

© Sega

Big bad Brutus is actually the mildest looking boss of the four

The renders are carefully hidden inside the zip file though – if you have to know, the exact folder is as follows:

Overkill_Fansite_Kit.zip \ Overkill_Fansite_Kit \ Art_&_Screenshots \ Suffer like G Did \ How could anyone do this \ Dogs of the AMS \ Dont come \ Dont come \ Equivocate \ ggggrrrrrnrnrnrnrnrnnnggggg \ Meet G over here

The long folder structure also means that this particular folder has to be extracted manually for most users, especially you intend to unzip it from any other folder other than the root directory e.g C:\ .

Of course there’s other goodies in the fansite kit including the cover artwork for the graphic novel available only with the Collector’s Edition of this game.

Games Thursday : Paint the World Red in Shotgun FunFun

Caught Shotgun FunFun from www.g4g.it back in March 2009. In Chad Chisolm’s Shotgun FunFun, the protagonist Buck Morris must unload as many shells from his trusty pump-action shotgun on the endless waves of claylike man-chomping, soul-sucking demons swarming into the level. Alternatively, he can opt to punch their heads in with the right mouse button when they get too close for comfort.

Firing the shotgun has a nice punchy boom to it (go easy on your speaker’s volume control since it will probably bring a warm fuzzy ring to your ears after prolonged playing :) ). Not that you will survive for that long since those accursed demons keep coming no matter how many you put down. Although there are several safe spots within the single level in the game to camp and take potshots at those pesky demons, that’s not how Shotgun FunFun’s supposed to be played :) Besides, there isn’t an exit out of this level – you wouldn’t want to share breathing space with a horde of ravenous demons, would you?

Your sole purpose therefore, is sell your life as dearly as possible and go out in a blaze of glory by taking out as many demons before they tear you to bits. Your final score is measured by your survival time multipled by your aggression level (average kills per 2 seconds)

Overall, a nice little timekiller – it’s not something you’ll play for a long time but it’s quite a lot of fun while it lasts :)

Art Friday: Der Blog der lebenden Toten (Blog Of The Living Dead)

Something I read over at Skull-A-Day about an ongoing art project by Timo Grubing to create a different artistic representation of the living dead (or the undead) everyday. Started on Halloween 2008, Timo has already 150+ entries at Der Blog der lebenden Toten (Blog Of The Living Dead) and will continue to update the blog every day with a new addition to his growing army of zombies all the way till Halloween 2009.

Happy/Zombie Face – Day 126 (05 March 2009)

While I’m definitely fascinated by zombies and the undead, I know that not everyone is so inclined on such a morbid and macabre subject so I’ll just put up some of my favourites and you can decide on whether you want to check it out. I’ll skip the ones with entrails spilling out too, if case you’re reading this before lunch :)

We’ll start off with a happy zombie. Timo’s creations seem to be perpetually grinning :) Click on the links below each image to go directly to Timo’s blog to view them in their original resolution.

Games Thursday : Deadhunt – Zombies, Zombies and More Zombies!

Imagine being confined at the Stonehenge together with a host of ugly zombies. That’s exactly what you get in Deadhunt, an rather old (2005) FPS by indie developers REL Games. Oh, you get to shoot and run around in circles a lot too.

The first demo scenario Rewards starts off easy enough with a few zombies rising from their undead slumber and loping slowly and awkwardly in your general direction. Before long, you’ll start to make a run for it as larger groups of zombies start popping up on your radar approaching from every direction. And after a minute or so, you’ll turn back and behold an entire army of angry (and probably very hungry) zombies hot on your heels. Magnificently golden armoured ones in the lead are closely followed by zombies protected in all sorts of leather and metal armour and carrying wicked looking scythes, maces, swords, battle axes and whatnot.

Some of the zombies just won’t stay put – shooting off a limb or half the head still doesn’t make them any less eager to clobber you into a bloody pulp – like this damn zombie below with a massive two-handed sword and half a head shot off.

Armed with only a single weapon – usually a pathetic submachine gun or a shotgun) against this multitude of hungry undead, it’s only a matter of time before you’re overwhelmed and brought down. Grenades, powerups and runes (permanent powerups) might provide for a slightly longer stay in this accursed place though :)

Blowing the opposition away with a tactical nuke

Download the demo for Deadhunt. The full version which comes with 40 scenarios costs $19.95 if you can’t get enough of the zombies in the 5 demo scenarios.
